ESL Games: Talking Boards

Today's post is about one of my favourite ESL activities: talking board games.

Talking board games are great for ESL lessons because...

1: Variety & Flexibility

You can use board games to cover any grammar point, vocabulary, or conversation topic. One game can be adapted for any level. I recommend ESL instructors be easy with the rules: allow students to "stunt" and make changes, and there will be greater production of language. Plus, the activity will be that much more enjoyable.

2:  Student/Class Assessment

Talking board games also allow the instructor to step back and listen to her/his students. It's an ideal way for teachers to check understanding and progress because the students are more relaxed. It makes tasks like pattern practice more interesting. Instructors also have the option of joining the game to create a better student/teacher rapport.

3: Price
ESL instructors don't always have the most resources, and often have to pay for extra materials themselves. Talking board games can be made with a half decent laptop computer, arts and crafts supplies, at very little cost. Of course, the Internet has lots of free games ready to download. For instructors who are good at drawing and have a large whiteboard, it's even cheaper.

4: Classroom Dynamics

Board games, and other student-to-student activities, help students get to know one another. This creates a more friendly, fun atmosphere for ESL learners. This makes the whole experience of learning and using English less intimidating and more fun.
