PRESENT SIMPLE vs PRESENT CONTINUOUS | What's The Difference?

A typical week: Luanne often naps at her desk. Once or twice a week, she wakes up after six o'clock, and has to rush back home. Every two weeks, she goes to the office on Saturdays to do extra work. Luanne works too much.

Today: Luanne is relaxing at Port Orly beach in Vanuatu right now. At the moment, she's looking at the beautiful waters of the South Pacific. She's also taking a scuba-diving course in the evenings. Luanne is really enjoying her holiday.

The first reading passage is an example of the PRESENT SIMPLE; the second is the PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the PRESENT SIMPLE for;

  • things that are generally true (I drive a blue Honda Civic)
  • routine, scheduled activities (Steve plays rugby every Sunday afternoon)

We use PRESENT CONTINUOUS for;

  • actions/activities happening at the moment of speaking (Bob is crossing street.)
  • actions/activities in progress/that haven't finished (I'm taking a course on coding right now)
