Zero Infinitives | No Gerunds

Marvel Comics/George Perez

Don't worry. This isn't my comic book blog. This post is all about ZERO INFINITIVES (a follow up to the  Gerund or Infinitive post in March).

Zero Infinitives come after

  • verbs of perception such as look, see, feel, watch, and hear.
  • modal/auxiliary verbs like could/can, would, will, and must,
  • the expressions had better and would rather,
  • and the verbs let and make.

Zero infinitives don't have the preposition "to" before them.

  • I like to watch the artist draw in pencil.
  • We heard the door open downstairs.
  • Lauren would teach you how to cook if she had time.
  • Shay had better study for the exam next week.
  • Let me help you.
Zero infinitives are also called "bare" infinitives (but zero is much cooler).
