At last, a post on passive verbs has finally been written. It was pointed out to me, by one of my students, that this blog didn't have a post on passives. So, that mistake will be corrected today😆.
Passive Verbs: Basics
We use passive verbs when,
- the object is more important than the subject
The software was updated yesterday. (Who or what updated the software isn't important)
- the subject is unknown
My car is being repaired at the garage down the street. (We don't know the mechanic fixing the car)
- to give general information
Fries and drinks are included in the price of the meals.
Passive verbs are often used in newspapers, essays, and other forms of formal writing. It's good for giving general facts, describing processes, or even maintaining privacy.
Structure
Passive verbs are conjugated, in all tenses, with be + past participle.
