Learn English Today | Online Services

The coronavirus (COVID-19) can't stop your English training thanks to Skype and other online services. Today's post is on how prepare for online ESL training and the services I can provide to you.

In general...

Before your first lesson, email your instructor and, along with your name and contact information, provide the information below.

  • English level (based on your test results,  CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • Schedule (make sure to time differences if you're overseas and/or in a different time zone)
  • The kind of lesson you want (test prep, basic communication, business English, etc)
  • Learning activities you enjoy
  • What you're willing to pay (very important)
  • Inform the instructor of any special needs you might have (larger fonts, louder voices, etc)

Remember: you are in charge of your learning experience. Be clear about your expectations. Don't be afraid to make requests. You're spending a lot of your time and money on your language training.

SLE Test Of Oral Proficiency (TOP)

This is a speaking test that's mainly focused on work related topics. Tasks include listening to audio dialogues and providing summaries and feedback on the issues discussed.

SLE Test Of Written Expression

This is actually a clone of TOEIC's parts 5 and 6.  It has gap-fill and error recognition tasks. It's a grammar test not a writing test.

SLE Test of Reading Comprehension

Learners read memos, emails, etc and answer basic comprehension questions. There are also vocabulary questions (synonyms).

In a future blog post, we may cover these tests in more detail.
