It can't be avoided. If you're going to write about the English language, the F-word has to come up at some point. So, here it is. This post is as safe-for-work as it can be, but still be careful: it's a bit NSFW.
The History Of The F-Word
The origins of the f-word are unclear, but many linguists believe it comes from an ancient German word ficken meaning to hit, pound, or thrust. It could possibly be from Dutch, fokken (to reproduce). It was first used in English literature in 1500 (or possibly earlier). For more on this, read Flashbak's article here.
F💣ck Grammar & Usage
American comedian, George Carlin brilliantly describes fuck's grammatical functions and uses in the short clip below.
Bowser & Blue, the comedic musical duo from Canada, have a hilarious sketch on the F-word (which only refers to the word fuck). There's a lot amusing Canadiana in this video as well.
The infographics below also highlight the many uses and functions of fuck.
Fuck can be used to express love, friendship, anger, sexual desire, confusion, sarcasm, and more. It's truly the most versatile word in the English language.
The F-Word In Pop Culture
Brian DePalma's Scarface, starring Al Pacino, once held the world record for the most frequent use of fuck in movie.
F💢cking Controversy In Canada 🍁
Canada's former prime-minister, Pierre Eliot Trudeau, was once harshly criticized for using the f-word in the House Of Commons in 1971. In those days, sessions weren't recorded or televised, but many believe that Trudeau had actually told another politician to "fuck off".
The f-word is considered a "bad word" and many believe it's rude and vulgar to use it in certain settings. Nowadays, there's a more relaxed attitude about it, but, in general, most people try to limit their use of the word.
Others, such as singer/actor, Pat Boone, believe it should never be used. He is actually very creative in finding alternatives to the f-word.
F💣ck IS English
Fuck is the one word that is truly English. Billy Connolly (a Scottish comedian) makes this point when discussing the phrasal verb, fuck off.
