English is difficult to learn and use largely because of phrasal verbs for example:
put up
This can mean to place an object on a shelf, or wall; or it can mean to give money for a purchase, or investment.
Bob put his book up on the top shelf.
Kelly put up $1000 for her friends' small business.
Phrasal verbs are verbs with one or two prepositions (for, up, on, over, etc). The meanings of these words can change depending on the preposition(s) in front of the verb.
Phrasal verbs are used in everyday conversation, writing, and business. So, it is important to learn them.
